Part of Paul Hiyama

Seattle native Paul Hiyama was a high school senior at the time of removal and received his diploma while incarcerated at Puyallup Assembly Center, before being sent to Minidoka. With the support of the ABHMS he was able to attend Kalamazoo College, where he was close with fellow Nisei Baptist Tom Sugihara. In Summer 1944, Hiyama returned to Minidoka for several months as a representative of the Japanese American Student Relocation Council, before being drafted into the Army later that year. After the war Hiyama completed his degree at Kalamazoo, studied at the New School and the University of Chicago, and was ordained as an Episcopal priest.
