Born in Oceanside, California, Roy Yoneo Ishihara joined Gardena Valley Baptist Church as a teenager in 1937, where he befriended fellow future ministers Paul Nagano and Yasushi Wada. In early 1942 Ishihara’s family were among those Japanese Americans to “voluntarily” relocate from the coat, moving to Salt Lake City and thereby avoiding incarceration. Ishihara attended the University of Utah and later received ABHMS support to attend Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary. After the war he had a successful ministerial career with multiple churches in California and Hawaii.
