Virginia Swanson was first appointed to the Japanese Christian Center in Sacramento, California by the WABHMS in 1929. After three years, she transferred to the Japanese Baptist Mission on Terminal Island, San Pedro, California. There she was able to assist and record the evacuation of the Japanese from Terminal Island in 1942. Immediately after the attack on Pearl Harbor, she and other missionaries began arranging for shelters when the inevitable evacuation order came. She assisted in resettlement work in Minneapolis and Detroit during the war. She later married pastor Kichitaro Yamamoto.
